Making Biodiversity Safeguards for REDD+ Work in Practice
UNEP-WCMC has developed operational guidelines to assist countries in implementing biodiversity safeguards for REDD+. At the most recent meeting of the UNFCCC (Cancun, Dec 2010), the Parties to the Convention agreed a full set of social and environmental safeguards. With support from DEFRA (UK Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs), we have formulated a set of guidelines that focus on implementing the biodiversity safeguards. These guidelines address both the potential risks to biodiversity presented by REDD+, and the many opportunities for REDD+ to benefit biodiversity conservation.
