REDD+ and the 2020 Aichi Biodiversity Targets: Promoting Synergies in International Forest Conservation Efforts
Recognizing the multiple functions of forest, Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) have both initiated efforts to address the impacts of forest loss and degradation. Through the CBD, countries have agreed a set of “Aichi Biodiversity Targets”, including ambitious targets for the conservation, sustainable use and restoration of forests. Through the UNFCCC, countries are discussing a financial mechanism to promote REDD+.
Policy Brief 4: The Role of the Private Sector in REDD+: The Case for Engagement and Options for Intervention
This brief aims to encourage public sector REDD+ planners and practitioners to engage with and mobilize the private sector through a range of possible interventions. It identifies relevant private sector actors, and outlines their potential role, in the context of REDD+.
National Forest Monitoring Systems: Monitoring and Measurement, Reporting and Verification (M & MRV) in the Context of REDD+ Activities
This document builds on the brief paper presented at the 7th Meeting of the UN-REDD Programme Policy Board, held in Berlin, October 2011 (UN-REDD/PB7/2011/13), which lays out ways to consider the REDD+ monitoring and information provision needs in the broader context of national development and environmental strategies, at the implementation level.
UNEP-WCMC has developed operational guidelines to assist countries in implementing biodiversity safeguards for REDD+. At the most recent meeting of the UNFCCC (Cancun, Dec 2010), the Parties to the Convention agreed a full set of social and environmental safeguards. With support from DEFRA (UK Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs), we have formulated a set of guidelines that focus on implementing the biodiversity safeguards. These guidelines address both the potential risks to biodiversity presented by REDD+, and the many opportunities for REDD+ to benefit biodiversity conservation.
