UNEP-WCMC has developed operational guidelines to assist countries in implementing biodiversity safeguards for REDD+. At the most recent meeting of the UNFCCC (Cancun, Dec 2010), the Parties to the Convention agreed a full set of social and environmental safeguards. With support from DEFRA (UK Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs), we have formulated a set of guidelines that focus on implementing the biodiversity safeguards. These guidelines address both the potential risks to biodiversity presented by REDD+, and the many opportunities for REDD+ to benefit biodiversity conservation.

This report examines the scope for Reducing Emissions from Forest Degradation and Deforestation (REDD) in Tanzania, focusing on the developing UN-REDD programme. The causes of deforestation, potential obstacles to the implementation of REDD, and some possible solutions are discussed. This is a Masters students project report, produced by Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (USA), in collaboration with UNEP-WCMC (UK).

In consultation with the Biodiversity Task Force, Prof. Paul Ferraro, Panel Member lead expert on biodiversity, designed a study on Payments for Environmental Services, resulting in a commissioned paper which provides guidance to the GEF Council, Secretariat, Evaluation Office, and GEF agencies on the development and evaluation of GEF investments in Payments for Environmental Services (PES) programs.
