The Nigeria REDD+ University takes place 19-21 March in Calabar, Cross River State, the pioneer state in Nigeria for REDD+. The UN-REDD Programme will provide technical and financial support to this event that intends to foster understanding and multi-stakeholder dialogue on REDD+ and to serve as public inception of Nigeria’s REDD+ Readiness Programme. During its seventh Policy Board meeting 13-14 October 2011, the UN-REDD Programme approved US$4 million in funding for Nigeria's National Programme for REDD+.These critical funds support the capacity of national governments to prepare and implement REDD+ strategies with the active involvement of local stakeholders, including Indigenous Peoples and other forest-dependent communities. A Technical Consultation on Social & Environmental Safeguards for REDD+ in Nigeria is taking place in Abuja on 2-4 August 2011. The consultation is conducted with a multi-stakeholder team of 15 individuals who will be using the draft UN-REDD Social and Environmental Principles and Criteria. Read more
A brainstorming workshop was held with key Nigerian REDD+ stakeholders - from federal and state levels - in Lagos on 20 May 2011, during which consensus was reached on the value-added of Participatory Government Assessments (PGAs) for REDD+ in Nigeria, on the key governance issues which should be assessed, and on a broad timeline and steps for the first phase of PGA process (from June until December 2011). In the November issue of the UN-REDD Programme newsletter, we highlight UN-REDD Programme activities at COP16 and Forest Day 4, including the launch of the Programme’s new publication “Perspectives on REDD+” which will be released 2 December in Cancun and online. We hear reactions from UN-REDD Programme countries that were collectively approved for US$15.2 million funding at the recent Policy Board meeting and REDD+ representatives in Nigeria reflect on the UN-REDD Programme’s recent mission to the country.
