Nigeria Announcements
Four Ministers and high-level representatives from Ghana, Nigeria and Uganda came together to officially launch their National REDD+ Strategies at a COP 23 Side-Event in Bonn on 16th November 2017.
Cross-River State REDD+ Strategy and National REDD+ framework strategy for Nigeria presented including an overview of the progress of REDD+ process in Nigeria
The Nigeria National Safeguards Working Group is pleased to release the: Cross River State REDD+ Safeguards Principles & Criteria: Assisting the design of REDD+ policies and measures.
To protect against potential risks and promote benefits from REDD+, seven safeguards must be supported throughout the implementation of REDD+ actions. These are known as the "Cancun safeguards", and were agreed at the 16th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate held in Cancun in 2010 (COP16).
Many UN-REDD partner countries are developing safeguards approaches and information systems with UN-REDD Programme support. Cross River State, with more than 50% of Nigeria’s remaining tropical high forests, has been the focus of REDD+ activity in the country. Within the context of the National REDD+ Readiness Programme, a recent priority for Cross River has been safeguards. UN-REDD Programme Safeguards Coordinator Steve Swan speaks with Edu Effiom, Chairman of the National Safeguards Working Group, to learn about their experiences engaging in a multi-stakeholder process to meet international requirements on REDD+ safeguards. REDD+ work in Nigeria has received a major boost with the first sub national level Strategy for Cross River State (CRS) almost finalized as well as a National REDD+ Framework Strategy. Both Strategies are critical components of an innovative two pronged approach of State and Federal level implementation of REDD+ in Nigeria and efforts towards the implementation of the Warsaw Framework.

The report on the workshop ‘Safeguards and multiple benefits from REDD+ in Nigeria’ (26-27th November 2013, Calabar), is now finalized and available here. The workshop aimed at informing the development of social and environmental safeguards and priorities for REDD+ planning in Cross River State, and building capacity on REDD+ safeguards with key stakeholders.
There are four vacancies open within Nigeria's UN-REDD National Programme. Please find the descriptions here and note the deadline for application is Monday, 8 July.

In Calabar, Nigeria, 54 participants from both the federal and Cross River State level convened in January 2013 to get more insights on the relevance of the PGA in Nigeria’s federal and state level REDD+ efforts, to reach agreement on the governance domains on which the PGA will be providing governance data eventually, as well as to agree on the organizational structure and the way forward for the next couple of months.
The Capacity Development for REDD+ Regional Data collection workshop took place in Berlin, 28 May-8 June. The main aim of the workshop was the assessment and compilation of forest sector activity data for the GHG inventory for 11 countries from Latin American and Africa. This helped identify the significant data gaps still remaining in most countries which will form the basis for further work on their GHG inventories, with support from the CD-REDD II team.
